Fox 5 Admits AR-15 Not Assault Rifle

In this video, a local Fox 5 news crew admits their mistake in calling the AR-15 an assault rifle. Why is this important?… It is important because a common tactic of the anti-Second Amendment crowd is to use “scary” sounding terminology in an effort to manipulate those who do not know better. In this case, they have tried (rather successfully) to attach the phrase “assault rifle” to the AR-15.

So, for those that are really interested in knowing the truth, the “AR” in AR-15 DOES NOT stand for “assault rifle” or “automatic rifle.” It simply stands for Armalite, the company that designed this style of rifle.

By definition, an “assault rifle” is a fully automatic (or burst fire) rifle. In other words, you pull the trigger and, while the trigger is pressed, the rifle will fire multiple rounds. This is not what an AR-15 does! An AR-15 is a semi-automatic rifle! In other words, only one round will fire when the trigger is pressed. Obviously, calling an AR-15 an “assault rifle” is totally incorrect. When someone uses the term “assault rifle” to describe the AR-15, they are either ignorant of the facts, or they are trying to manipulate you.
